A thematic review of prison-based social work


“Fundamental reform” is needed in prison social work, inspectors have warned.

It comes in the first phase of a review which considered the direction of Scotland’s prison-based social work services within the context of the changing prison population, resource constraints, and competing demands.

The report, published today, recognised the important contribution of social workers across the prison estate and found that prison-based social work teams are comprised of skilled and experienced staff.

A spokesperson for the Care Inspectorate said: "An inspection has identified serious and significant concerns about the quality of care experienced by children and young people at Elmbank House in Falkirk.
"We understand this is a difficult and distressing time for children and young people experiencing care and staff at the service.
"However, our first priority is always the health and wellbeing of people experiencing care.
