We are aware of a number of incidents where children have left early learning and childcare services without an authorised adult. As you will know, this presents a significant risk to children's safety and well-being. There can be changes to services that may contribute to the potential risk of children slipping out unseen. There may new children who are still settling in, changes to staffing and changes to premises following work undertaken during holiday periods etc. In order to take a proactive and preventative approach we are reminding providers of their responsibility to ensure that individuals are observant of the children in their care, are knowledgeable about possible risk factors and follow safe and effective procedures.

Call for practice examples for new early years food resource
We are collaborating with Scottish Government and NHS health boards to develop a new resource that will celebrate and share examples of good practice for eating well in early learning and childcare settings. The publication will enhance the key messages from NHS Health Scotland’s guidance Setting the Table and will be useful across the wide range of children’s settings in the community.

Staff vacancies in care services 2016
More than a third of social care services across Scotland have reported unfilled staff vacancies in the past year, according to the Care Inspectorate, and almost half of those faced difficulty recruiting the right staff.

Blog: New online childminding resource

This is an exciting time for the childminding profession in Scotland. Childminders are an integral part of the Scottish Government’s plan to almost double entitlement to funded early learning and childcare (ELC) to 1140 hours per year by 2020 for all three- and four-year-olds as well as all eligible two-year-olds.
With this major increase in funded ELC hours, many of Scotland’s 5500 childminders may wish to play an important role in this expansion. So, it’s essential they continue to have up-to-date resources to help them provide the best possible outcomes for the children in their care.
